Food & Drink New entry

$25,000 FOR A DESSERT. AND YOU STILL HAVE TO EAT IT BEFORE IT MELTS.

The world's most expensive dessert comes with edible gold, a diamond spoon and an 18-carat gold bracelet. Because apparently chocolate wasn't expensive enough.

$25,000 FOR A DESSERT. AND YOU STILL HAVE TO EAT IT BEFORE IT MELTS.

We live in Monaco, where seeing something ridiculously expensive isn't exactly unusual. But Harriet wanted to know: what is the most ridiculous amount anyone has ever charged for dessert? The answer takes us to Serendipity 3 in New York and the Frrrozen Haute Chocolate, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's most expensive dessert at $25,000. It uses a blend of 28 different cocoas, including 14 described as some of the world's most expensive, and is decorated with 5 grams of edible 23-carat gold. Then things get properly ridiculous. It's served in a gold-lined goblet and comes with an 18-carat gold bracelet set with one carat of diamonds. And because apparently an ordinary spoon would ruin the experience, you eat it with a gold spoon decorated with diamonds, which you also get to keep. So yes, it's a $25,000 dessert. Although Harriet has pointed out that if most of the money is going on jewellery, this might actually be a very expensive bracelet that happens to come with some chocolate.

Why it's ridiculous

Because someone looked at chocolate, whipped cream and ice cream and thought: “This needs diamonds.” The $25,000 price includes an 18-carat gold and diamond bracelet and a diamond-covered gold spoon, which does raise a fairly important question: Is it really the world's most expensive dessert, or the world's most expensive jewellery purchase with free pudding?
