How to get to Monaco
Nice airport is the front door. From there it is train, road, bus or helicopter — each suits a different kind of trip.
Monaco has no airport of its own. Almost everyone arrives via Nice Côte d'Azur airport, then covers the last stretch along the coast. There is also a rail station in the heart of the Principality, built into the rock, which makes the train a genuinely good option.
By air, then onward
Fly into Nice and choose between a helicopter transfer, a private car, an airport bus or the train. The helicopter is the fastest and the most expensive; the train is the cheapest and often the least stressful, because coastal traffic can be slow in summer and during major events.
By train
Monaco-Monte-Carlo station sits underground in the middle of the Principality, with exits towards La Condamine and towards Monte-Carlo. Regional trains run frequently along the coast from Nice, Menton and Ventimiglia in Italy.
By road
Driving in is straightforward, parking is the harder part: use the public underground car parks rather than hunting for a space on the street. During race week and other big events, road access and parking change substantially.
By sea
Port Hercule and the Fontvieille harbour handle yachts, and berthing in peak season and during the Grand Prix needs to be arranged a long way ahead.
Getting around once you are here
- Walk — it is the fastest way across most of the Principality.
- Use the public lifts and escalators to skip the hills.
- Local buses cover the length of the coast within Monaco.
- Taxis exist but are limited at peak times; book ahead for early departures.
Common questions
- Does Monaco have an airport?
- No. The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur, with helicopter, road, bus and train transfers onward to Monaco.
- Is there a train to Monaco?
- Yes. Monaco-Monte-Carlo station is in the centre of the Principality and is served by frequent regional trains along the coast.
- Do you need a car in Monaco?
- No. The Principality is small enough to walk, and parking is easier to avoid than to solve.
