Is Monaco a country?
Monaco is a sovereign state, not a French region. Here is what that actually means when you visit or move here.
Yes. Monaco is a sovereign country — an independent principality on the Mediterranean coast, and one of the smallest states in the world. It is a full member of the United Nations and runs its own government, courts, police and public services.
So why does it feel so French?
Monaco shares a land border only with France, French is the official language, and the euro is the currency. France handles Monaco's defence under long-standing treaty arrangements. That closeness is why so many visitors assume Monaco is part of France — but the Principality makes its own laws and is ruled by the Prince, currently Prince Albert II, alongside an elected National Council.
What that means for you on the ground
- No border checkpoint: you walk or drive in from France without a passport control, but you are entering another country.
- The euro is used, and there is no separate Monégasque currency in circulation.
- Monaco is not in the European Union, though it is inside the Schengen travel area in practice.
- Residency is a formal application process, and being resident is different from being a Monégasque citizen — citizens are a minority of the population.
How big is it, really?
Small enough to cross on foot. Monaco is roughly two square kilometres, arranged as a set of districts stacked between the sea and the hillside: Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Fontvieille, Larvotto, the Carré d'Or and Monaco-Ville, the old town on the Rock. Most of what visitors want sits within a twenty-minute walk of the harbour, with public lifts doing the climbing for you.
