Where is Monaco?
On the Mediterranean coast, wedged between the French Riviera hills and the sea, minutes from Italy.
Monaco lies on the Mediterranean coast of southern Europe, on the stretch of shoreline known as the French Riviera. It is surrounded by France on every land side, with the Italian border a short drive east and Nice about half an hour west.
The districts, west to east
- Fontvieille — reclaimed land, the newer harbour, the stadium and a quieter residential feel.
- Monaco-Ville — the old town on the Rock, home to the Palace and the narrow streets above the sea.
- La Condamine — the main harbour, Port Hercule, the market and everyday shops.
- Monte-Carlo and the Carré d'Or — the Casino, the grand hotels and the luxury retail streets.
- Larvotto — the beach district, with the seafront promenade and beach clubs.
How close is close?
The whole Principality is walkable. Distances that look steep on a map are usually solved by the free public lifts and escalators that connect the levels. If you are staying near the harbour, the Casino, the old town and the beach are each a short walk away.
